Career development is critical for supporting students’ aspirations. Dr. Robyn Mixon-Davis, CFEC (Carolina Family Engagement Center) teacher partner at Woodland High School in Dorchester, wanted to bridge classroom career development with family awareness and support of career aspirations.  Working with CFEC Liaison Ranina Outing, Mixon-Davis knew the best way to improve student achievement with this goal was to increase career-focused planning and preparedness. And it was a tremendous success!

Families of students in Mixon-Davis’ class participate in career-related activities throughout the year to learn practical tools to support students’ career aspirations and the benefits of supporting their children’s career development. The activities are measured by the career-related parental support scales (surveys) and completing at least three activities on the career support checklist attached.

Mixon-Davis provided opportunities for students and parents to watch videos of people in various careers being interviewed about their work. Each month, parents and students complete a monthly checklist that details the career-related activities they have participated in.  Parents and students must complete a survey quarterly.

To motivate students, Mixon-Davis purchased gift cards for the students. As they participated in monthly and quarterly activities, they received entries for returning completed surveys and packets.

What an incredible example of creative solutions to a classroom problem! Not only were students exposed to more career paths available in their community, but now they also have a solid foundation of support to help with their aspirations. CFEC is proud to partner with innovative teachers like Robyn Mixon-Davis.
